Congratulations Neil on your Radio 4 debut as director to Kim Newman's play yesterday. Might I comment that I loved it and what is with those spiteful (jealous perhaps?) shits who posted on the BBC site???

Thanks Robert, that means a lot to me. The BBC messageboards can be a bit of a 'one flew over the cuckoos nest' zone at times, and it is strongly suggested to producers NOT to look there for views on their programmes...mainly because for some reason the majority of people who post there seem to only want to be negative and spiteful. I quite enjoy looking at them, because after 20+ years doing this, I learned long ago that the odd negative comment is made up for by a massive silent majority who enjoyed it.

However, I must say that the one specific person on there (ALS?) who has said that the play was twee and dull and this was because Kim Newman has 'form', does make me want to ask them just exactly what it is that they have contributed to the arts?!

As you know only too well, you can't please everyone, but then art isn't supposed to be universally beloved anyway. If I didn't annoy at least one person every time I made something, it wouldn't be so much fun!

Now we move on to Friday at "Mayflies"...which I guarantee will divide people, mostly along the lines of "Was that a scifi play?" as it is subtle and ingenious and rather beautiful I feel.

Thanks again and hurrah for genre!

n Smile

Two scifi afternoon plays on Radio 4, directed by little old me:

"Cry Babies" by Kim Newman, starring Alex Jennings, Natasha Little, Rupert Degas and Sarah Douglas - was on air yesterday but is available until the 16th on the iPlayer.

"Mayflies" by Mike Maddox, starring Sir Derek Jacobi, Jason Isaacs, Catherine McCormack, Sarah Douglas & Steven Cree - 2.15pm Radio 4 on Friday (13th March)

Enjoy!

Sorry missed it, I gave up on BBC websites and forums some time ago, mainly inhabited by morons

Heard Brightonomicron mentioned on Radio 7 though buy missed the broadcast.

I only really listen to radio 7 now anyway

Hi Neil

I thought both of the plays were brilliant.

They are different to each other and yet both were totally rivetting!!

Here's hoping you get loads more commissions!! Very Happy
